What is NHRC?
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is a statutory body established under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. It is India’s apex human rights institution, responsible for protecting and promoting human rights across the country. For law students interested in human rights law, constitutional law, or public policy, therefore, an internship at NHRC offers direct exposure to one of India’s most important statutory bodies.
About the NHRC Online Short Term Internship (OSTI)
NHRC runs the Online Short Term Internship Programme (OSTI), a two-week virtual internship that gives students practical exposure to human rights law, human rights protection mechanisms, and the functioning of a national statutory commission. Since the internship is fully online, students from any part of India can apply and participate without relocating.
Approximately 100 interns are selected for each batch. Selected interns receive a stipend of ₹2,000 for the two-week period.
Who Can Apply: Eligibility Criteria
You are eligible to apply if you fall into one of these categories:
- Students in the 3rd year or onwards of any integrated 5-year PG course
- Students in the 3rd or final year of a graduation course
- Students of any semester or year of any postgraduate degree course, including students in the 3-year LLB programme
- Students of any semester or year of any postgraduate diploma course
- Research scholars in any stream
In addition to the above, you must have consistently scored a minimum of 60% marks in Class XII and in the first four semesters of your current degree programme.
Furthermore, students who have previously attended any internship programme organised by NHRC are not eligible to apply again.
How Are Interns Selected?
NHRC selects interns based on a structured scoring system. Specifically, the selection criteria are:
- Class XII marks — 30 marks
- Graduation marks — 40 marks
- Statement of Purpose — 30 marks
As a result, your academic record and your Statement of Purpose both carry significant weight. Candidates with research potential in human rights receive preference during selection.
How to Write a Strong Statement of Purpose
Your Statement of Purpose must be 250 words and must answer one question: “Reason for Joining as Intern in NHRC.”
Since SOP carries 30 out of 100 marks, it is one of the most important parts of your application. Here is how to write it well:
- First, briefly introduce yourself — your year, course, and institution.
- Next, explain your genuine interest in human rights — connect it to your academic work, prior experience, or a specific issue you care about.
- Then, explain what you specifically hope to learn at NHRC and how it connects to your career goals.
- Finally, keep it focused and precise — 250 words is not much, so every sentence must count.
