What Is the NESTS Internship Programme?

The National Education Society for Tribal Students (NESTS) is an autonomous body set up under India’s Ministry of Tribal Affairs. It establishes and manages Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) and Centres of Excellence for Sports, delivering upper primary, secondary, and senior secondary education to ST and PVTG students in tribal-dominated areas. This NESTS internship gives students genuine exposure to how a government body runs large-scale education infrastructure, and for law students specifically, it includes a dedicated Legal vertical alongside administration, finance, recruitment, academics, and construction.

About the Internship

NESTS runs this internship as a short-term, focused engagement, lasting a minimum of one month and a maximum of two months. The programme accepts just two interns at a time, which makes it considerably more selective than most rolling internship schemes. You can apply as part of a dissertation or capstone project, or simply as a student in your third or final year of study during the relevant academic year.

Selected interns receive a lump sum stipend of INR 10,000 per month, along with two leaves during the internship period. If your role involves any official travel, NESTS reimburses that cost too, covering Deluxe or AC Bus travel, 3-Tier AC train fare, and applicable daily allowance at Level 5 government rates. No other expenses get covered beyond this.

Who Can Apply for the NESTS Internship?

NESTS keeps eligibility open to a wide academic range. You can apply if you:

• Hold a graduation degree, or are pursuing postgraduation, a PG Diploma, or an advanced academic degree
• Are studying in India or abroad, as an Indian student
• Are in your third or final year of examinations during the current academic year
• Are 30 years old or younger at the time of application

What Will You Actually Work On?

NESTS structures this internship around real engagement with government policy and school-level implementation, not passive observation. As an intern, you can expect to:

• Work within one of several verticals, including Administration, Finance and Auditing, Data Collection and Analysis, Academics and Training, Recruitment, Construction, or Legal
• Contribute to policy formulation through empirical analysis, reporting, and briefing papers
• Interact directly with NESTS functionaries responsible for implementing EMRS activities and policy initiatives
• Engage with other line departments, state governments, and stakeholders involved in running the EMRS scheme nationally
• Conduct pilot projects or micro-studies focused on NESTS’s ongoing work, if that fits your academic requirements

Important Things to Note Before Applying

• Applications open on a strict monthly window. NESTS only accepts applications between the 1st and 10th of each month, through the designated email and application format.
• Performance is actively reviewed. NESTS can terminate your internship with notice if you don’t complete assignments on time or perform unsatisfactorily.
• Your certificate depends on completing the work. You’ll need to submit or present your assignments, papers, or reports to receive an experience certificate.
• Reservation category documentation matters. If you’re applying under SC/ST/OBC categories, you’ll need to furnish documentary proof along with your application.

5. Wait for the Committee’s review. NESTS informs candidates of the outcome through email.
