About the ILDR Internship
The Institute of Legislative Drafting and Research (ILDR) was established in 1989. It aims to train students and build capacity in legislative drafting, legal research and related areas across law, policy and regulation.
The ILDR Internship forms part of this initiative. Through the programme, students can gain exposure to the work connected with the Legislative Department and develop a better understanding of legislative and legal research processes.
The internship is intended for students who want to explore legislative drafting, legal research, policy and government legal work. Selected interns may receive assignments related to the study, research or other functions of the Department.
Eligibility and Duration
The ILDR Internship is open to students enrolled in any of the following programmes:
- 5-year integrated LL.B. course
- 3-year LL.B. course
- 3-year B.A. (Law) course
The internship starts from the date of joining and lasts for a minimum of one month and up to three months, depending on the decision of the Competent Authority. The Department may renew the internship for one additional term.
Applicants must also submit a Character Certificate along with their application. The certificate can be signed by the Head, Principal or Dean of the educational institution, or by a First Class Magistrate or First Class Gazetted Officer.
The application form also asks candidates to provide academic marks, details of articles or research papers, extracurricular activities, moot court participation, achievements and the reasons for seeking the internship. Candidates must attach a detailed CV as well.
Selection and Internship Details
ILDR selects interns on a need-based basis, subject to approval from the Competent Authority. The decision of the Competent Authority remains final. Importantly, the internship does not provide any remuneration, allowance or reimbursement of expenses. ILDR also does not undertake any employment liability for interns.
The internship is full-time and physical. Interns must remain present from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, unless the controlling officer permits otherwise. They must also sign the daily attendance register.
Candidates cannot pursue another course or work during the internship. In addition, interns must follow the Department’s confidentiality requirements and may receive restricted access to classified or confidential files and certain areas of the Legislative Department.
Selected interns must submit a weekly progress report. At the end of the internship, they must also submit a complete report covering the work undertaken during their tenure.
To receive an internship certificate, candidates must maintain at least 90% attendance during the internship. The certificate will not be issued if attendance falls below this requirement, and absent days will be recorded in the certificate.
Interns must also bring a Police Clearance Certificate for issuance of their entry pass and sign an undertaking relating to the code of conduct and other internship requirements.
