Confused about which government exams you’re actually eligible for after law school? Here’s a simple, no-fluff list to get you started — perfect if you’re just beginning to explore options beyond private practice.

1. Judicial Services Exam (PCS-J)

The big one. Each state conducts its own Judicial Service exam to recruit civil judges and district magistrates. You don’t need to clear the All India Bar Exam to sit for it, and final-year law students can appear in most states.

  • Eligibility: A Bachelor’s degree in law (3-year or 5-year LLB) from a recognized university, plus enrollment as an advocate under the Advocates Act 1961.
  • Leads to: Civil Judge (Junior Division), and eventually District Judge with experience.
  • Note: There’s ongoing discussion about introducing an All India Judicial Service exam as well.

2. UPSC Civil Services Exam (CSE)

Not law-specific, but hugely popular among law grads aiming for IAS, IPS, and other central services. Law is also a valid optional subject.

3. CLAT PG

Required for admission to LLM programs at NLUs — useful if you’re considering academia, research roles, or a UGC-NET-linked teaching career down the line.

4. RBI Grade B (Legal) & Other Bank Legal Officer Exams

Options like RBI Grade B Legal and IBPS Law Officer open doors into banking-sector legal departments — drafting, compliance, and litigation support for public sector banks.

5. SEBI Grade A (Legal Stream)

A legal officer role with India’s securities market regulator — good fit if you’re interested in corporate/securities law from the regulatory side.

6. SSC CGL

Any graduate, including law graduates, can apply — common target posts include Assistant Enforcement Officer, CBI Inspector, or Income Tax Officer, all of which use legal and investigative skills.

7. PSU Legal Officer Exams

Public sector undertakings like ONGC and organisations such as CBI regularly hire legal officers for in-house legal advisory work — separate recruitment drives, not one common exam.

8. JAG Entry (Judge Advocate General) — Indian Army

A route for law graduates to join the Indian Army’s legal branch as a commissioned officer, handling military law and courts martial.

  • Eligibility: Indian citizenship, open to both genders, age limit typically 21–27 years.

9. MEA Legal Roles

Legal positions tied to international representation — trade law, human rights matters, and dispute resolution/negotiation work — though specific requirements vary by role within the ministry.

A Quick Note Before You Start Preparing

Exam patterns, eligibility, and notifications vary by state and by year, so always cross-check the latest official notification from the relevant conducting body (State PSC, High Court, RBI, SEBI, UPSC, etc.) before applying- this list is meant as a starting map, not a substitute for the official source.
