What Is the CERC Internship Scheme?
The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) is a statutory body established under an Act of Parliament and functions under the Ministry of Power, Government of India. The Commission is responsible for regulating India’s inter-state electricity market, promoting competition, ensuring fair tariff mechanisms, facilitating power trading, and improving the efficiency of the country’s electricity sector.
The CERC Internship Scheme allows students to gain first-hand exposure to the functioning of India’s power sector while working with different divisions of the Commission. Interns contribute to research, policy analysis, legal work, and technical projects under the supervision of experienced officers, making it an excellent opportunity for students interested in public policy, energy law, regulation, economics, and governance.
About the CERC Internship
The internship is available throughout the year, depending on the requirements of different divisions within the Commission. Selected interns are attached to a specific division where they work on projects related to the Commission’s regulatory and policy functions.
The objective of the programme is not merely observational learning. Instead, interns actively contribute by preparing legal analyses, policy papers, technical reports, research notes, and project reports that support the Commission’s work.
One of the biggest advantages of this internship is the opportunity to understand how India’s electricity sector is regulated from within a statutory authority, offering exposure that is difficult to obtain through conventional law firm internships.
What Kind of Work Can You Expect?
Depending on the division you are assigned to, interns may work on:
- Legal and policy research
- Analysis of electricity regulations and regulatory frameworks
- Preparation of policy papers and technical reports
- Research relating to the power sector
- Project reports and analytical studies
- Assisting officers with ongoing regulatory work
Students also gain exposure to the functioning of an independent regulatory body and develop an understanding of how law, economics, public policy, and technical regulation intersect within India’s energy sector.
