What Is the CAG Internship Scheme?

The Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (C&AG) runs this internship through its Knowledge and Capacity Building Wing. The CAG Internship Scheme places students with field offices of the Indian Audit and Accounts Department (IAAD). If you want direct exposure to how the Indian government functions, and how public sector auditing and accounting actually works, this internship gives you that access from inside a constitutional body.

About the CAG Internship 2026

This scheme supersedes every earlier IAAD internship circular, so if you’ve seen older versions of this scheme floating around, this is the current one to follow. The internship runs on an unpaid basis throughout the year, based on what each field office needs at the time. You choose your preferred field office and area of interest before applying, and the Knowledge and Capacity Building Wing places you accordingly within 10 working days of applying.

Each internship lasts a minimum of four weeks and a maximum of six months. If you don’t complete the required period, CAG won’t issue you a certificate, so plan your internship duration around your actual availability before you apply.

Who Can Apply for the CAG Internship 2026?

CAG has laid out specific, marks-based eligibility criteria. You can apply if you fall into one of these categories:

• Undergraduate students who’ve completed or appeared for their second year (4th semester) exams, and scored at least 80% in Class 12
• Postgraduate students who’ve completed or appeared for their first year (2nd semester) exams, or who are pursuing research or a PhD, and scored at least 60% in their graduation
• Recent graduates waiting for admission to higher studies, provided they’ve scored 60% or more cumulatively across all years of their degree, and the gap between their final result and the internship start date doesn’t exceed six months

A candidate can apply for this internship a maximum of twice in a single financial year. If your application doesn’t meet the eligibility conditions, CAG will reject it outright, so double-check your marks and academic status before you submit.

What Will You Do as an Intern?

CAG builds this internship around real exposure, not passive observation. As an intern, you can expect to:

• Learn how government functioning and public sector auditing and accounting actually work, from inside a field office
• Contribute to policy formulation through empirical analysis, briefing reports, and policy papers
• Attend an orientation session with the Head of your assigned field office, who also assigns you a mentor
• Join weekly review meetings with a Director, Senior DAG, Deputy Director, or DAG, who guides you on your assigned work
• Submit a brief report or paper at the end of your internship, summarising your learning experience

Important Things to Note Before Applying

• Bring your own laptop. CAG expects interns to have their own laptop, though offices provide working space and internet.
• Attendance matters. You need a minimum of 75% attendance, and you must log your in and out time daily. Fall below that, and CAG won’t extend your internship or issue a certificate.
• You’ll need an NOC. Your college or institution must issue a No Objection Certificate confirming you won’t be required to attend classes during your internship period.
• Bring original documents at joining. You’ll need to produce original mark sheets and your NOC when you join, or your selection gets cancelled.
• Each office has limited capacity. Field offices can generally take a maximum of five interns at a time, though this can be relaxed with senior approval.
• This internship is unpaid, and it follows the provisions of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013.

1. Visit the CAG website (cag.gov.in) and check field offices in your preferred location, along with your area of interest.

3. Submit your application between the 1st and 20th of any month. Applications outside this window won’t be processed until the next cycle.
4. Wait for placement. The Knowledge and Capacity Building Wing places selected candidates at an appropriate field office within 10 working days.
5. On selection, submit your NOC and original mark sheets at the time of joining.
