What Is the CAG Headquarters Internship?
The Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (C&AG) runs a separate internship track for its Headquarters offices, distinct from its field office scheme. This CAG Headquarters Internship places students directly with functional wings at CAG’s central offices, spanning 21 domains, including Law, Public Finance, Direct and Indirect Taxes, and Infrastructure. If you want exposure to policy-level government work rather than a single field office posting, this track puts you closer to where CAG actually shapes national auditing and accounting policy.
About the CAG Headquarters Internship 2026
This scheme supersedes every earlier IAAD internship circular, so treat it as the current, governing version. The internship runs on an unpaid basis throughout the year, based on what CAG’s functional wings need at the time. Each internship lasts a minimum of four weeks and a maximum of six months. Miss the required duration, and CAG won’t issue you a certificate, so plan your commitment carefully before you apply.
Unlike the field office scheme, Headquarters placements happen only at seven specific CAG offices: New Delhi, Mumbai, Bhopal, Chennai, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, and Rajkot. You can read more about each office’s profile on CAG’s website under “Our Offices.”
Which Domains Can You Intern In?
CAG Headquarters accepts interns across 21 functional domains, including:
- Law
- Data Management and Analysis
- Economics
- Education / Human Resources Development
- Energy Sector
- Health, Nutrition, Women & Child Development
- Industry
- Infrastructure Connectivity
- Mass Communications and Social Media
- Mining Sector
- Natural Resources, Environment & Forests
- Information Systems
- Project Appraisal and Management
- Public Finances / Budget
- Public Private Partnership
- Direct and Indirect Taxes
- Transport Sector, including Railways and Roadways
- Finance and Commerce
- Strategic Management
- Statistics
- Local Governments (Rajkot office only)
For law students specifically, the Law domain gives you direct exposure to how legal and audit questions intersect at the level of national policy, something a standard litigation or corporate internship won’t offer.
Who Can Apply for the CAG Headquarters Internship 2026?
CAG applies the same marks-based eligibility criteria here as its field office scheme. You can apply if you fall into one of these categories:
- Undergraduate students who’ve completed or appeared for their second year (4th semester) exams, and scored at least 80% in Class 12
- Postgraduate students who’ve completed or appeared for their first year (2nd semester) exams, or who are pursuing research or a PhD, and scored at least 60% in their graduation
- Recent graduates waiting for admission to higher studies, provided they’ve scored 60% or more cumulatively across their degree, and the gap between their result and the internship start date doesn’t exceed six months
You can apply for this internship a maximum of twice in a single financial year. Applications that don’t meet these conditions get rejected outright, so verify your eligibility before you submit.
What Will You Do as an Intern?
CAG builds this internship around real, wing-level exposure. As an intern, you can expect to:
- Learn how government functioning and public sector auditing and accounting work, from inside a functional wing at Headquarters
- Contribute to policy formulation through empirical analysis, briefing reports, and policy papers
- Attend an orientation session with the Deputy or Additional Deputy C&AG of your assigned wing, who also assigns you a mentor
- Join weekly review meetings with the Director General or Principal Director of your wing
- Submit a brief report or paper at the end of your internship, summarising your learning experience
Important Things to Note Before Applying
- Bring your own laptop. CAG expects interns to have one, though the office provides working space and internet.
- Attendance matters. You need a minimum of 75% attendance, and you must log your in and out time daily. Fall below that, and CAG won’t extend your internship or issue a certificate.
- You’ll need an NOC. Your college or institution must confirm you won’t be required to attend classes during your internship period.
- Bring original documents at joining. You’ll need original mark sheets and your NOC, or your selection gets cancelled.
- Each wing has limited capacity. Functional wings can generally take a maximum of three interns at a time, though this can be relaxed with senior approval.
- This internship is unpaid, and it follows the provisions of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013.
