Bharat Sharma | Maharashtra National Law University, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar | Litigation Intern at ALMT Legal

Q1. How did he secure this internship?

Bharat applied through the firm’s official process at careers@almtlegal.com and followed up consistently for nearly two months. Notably, ALMT Legal usually prefers senior law students, and his application was initially rejected because he was only in his 2nd year. However, since he had applied specifically for the Litigation Team and already had prior litigation internship experience, the team reconsidered his application and eventually confirmed his internship.

The takeaway: a targeted application with relevant experience can override a standard rejection, even at a top firm.

Q2. What helped his profile stand out?

Before ALMT Legal, Bharat had already completed multiple litigation internships across Jaipur and Delhi. His profile focused on practical exposure, legal research, drafting work, and consistent internship experience, not on the length of his CV.

As he puts it: “It’s not about having the longest CV. It’s about presenting your actual work honestly and professionally.”

Q3. What kind of work did he do?

Unlike many internships where interns mainly observe, Bharat received real responsibilities from Day 1. His work included:

  • Legal research on ongoing civil and criminal matters
  • Drafting legal notices, affidavits, and a Power of Attorney
  • Assisting counsels before courts and tribunals in Mumbai
  • Working on a live matter involving an international client

He also attended client meetings, prepared briefs, and worked closely with Partners and Associates at the firm.

Q4. What were his biggest learnings?

For Bharat, the biggest learning was confidence. He entered the internship hesitant to speak during discussions but gradually learnt the importance of participating meaningfully and expressing well-researched opinions.

His most important piece of advice from the experience: “If you finish your work, ask for more work. Never remain idle during an internship.”

Q5. Advice for juniors applying to top law firms

→ Build practical experience gradually — don’t wait for the perfect internship.
→ Keep refining your CV regularly as your experience grows.
→ Apply early because slots fill quickly at top firms.
→ Follow up professionally and patiently — two months of follow-up made the difference here.
→ Don’t get discouraged by rejection — a rejection is not always final.

Q6. The honest reality of such internships

These internships are highly competitive, especially because top firms usually take only a few interns at a time. Beyond the brand name, the work involves strict timelines, real responsibilities, and constant learning — which makes professionalism and adaptability extremely important.

Bharat’s journey is a reminder that persistence, preparation, and consistency genuinely matter, even when the odds initially seem against you.
