I am a first-year law student at Jindal Global Law School. I am currently studying subjects such as Law of Torts and Contract Law and want to develop a strong understanding of these foundational subjects rather than studying only for examinations.

I am finding it difficult to properly understand some of my law subjects through classroom teaching alone. For example, I am currently struggling with Law of Torts and Contract Law and often find the prescribed textbooks difficult to understand when studying independently. I am therefore unsure about how I should approach these subjects—whether I should primarily rely on textbooks, lectures or videos, case laws, class notes, or a combination of these resources. I also want to develop a study method that will help me understand legal concepts clearly and retain them rather than simply memorising them for examinations.

As a first-year law student, what would be the most effective way for me to study and understand subjects such as Law of Torts and Contract Law? Should I begin with textbooks such as Ratanlal & Dhirajlal and then supplement them with lectures or videos, or would you recommend a different approach? Could you also guide me on how I should combine textbooks, lectures, case laws, class notes and note-making, and how I should approach a topic from the beginning until I am able to understand and apply the legal principle independently?
