My name is Vanshika Saxena, and I graduated from Kalinga University, Raipur, last year. After graduation, I started practising litigation because I wanted to gain practical legal experience while exploring opportunities in the corporate sector.
To prepare myself for a transition into a law firm, I have been actively upskilling. I am currently pursuing Corporate law and drafting courses . Despite consistently applying to law firms and working on my skills, I have not been able to secure an opportunity so far, which has left me wondering whether I am approaching this transition in the right way.
My Query:
As a recent law graduate currently practising litigation but aspiring to join a corporate law firm, what would you advise me to focus on so that I can realistically improve my chances of securing a law firm role?

Since you have experience of litigation same is an advantage for us. Additionally I understand that you are pursuing courses in corporate law and upskilling yourself.
Firstly, We need to understand that law firms are habitual of picking up students directly from colleges who are called freshers; so as to mold them as per requirement.
Secondly, we need to understand that as time passes by for example 3-5 years and more it will be much more difficult to enter law firms, as they expect us to bring clients with them.
So it is important for you to do the following at the earliest:
1. Decide the area of law which you wish to deal with and apply to law firms specifically the partners who are dealing with that law.
2. Contact your seniors from college or acquaintances from law firms for reference. This will ensure higher chances of interview.
3. Whenever you appear for an interview you must have knowledge of the issues in your CV and your area of interest (for which you are applying) to the 7th question. This was suggested to me by the Partner of SAM.
