I am a first-year law student who has recently started law school. As I interact with seniors and explore different opportunities, I often hear about the importance of internships, mooting, research papers, competitions, networking, maintaining a good CGPA, and developing practical legal skills.
The sheer number of opportunities and activities available in law school can sometimes feel overwhelming. As someone at the beginning of my legal journey, I find it difficult to understand which areas deserve the most attention and how I should allocate my time and efforts during the initial years of law school.
For students who are just beginning their law school journey, what should be the top priorities during the initial years? If you had to guide a junior, which three areas would you advise them to focus on the most, and why?
As a first-year law student, it is easy to feel overwhelmed by the number of opportunities available. While maintaining a good CGPA is important but the initial years of law school should also focus on gaining exposure and developing skills.
My advice would be to focus primarily on three areas:
1.Mooting and Inter-University Competitions:
Participate in moot courts, debates, and other competitions. They help develop research, drafting, advocacy, and public speaking skills. More importantly, they provide exposure to different law schools and help you build valuable social and professional networks with students from across the country.
2. Internships During Every Semester Break:
Internships give practical exposure to the legal profession and help you understand how law operates beyond textbooks. Try to intern in different settings to identify the areas of law that genuinely interest you while also building professional connections.
3. Research and Publications:
Since every semester involves project submissions, choose at least one project and work on it seriously. With proper research and effort, it can be developed into a publishable paper, helping you strengthen your research and writing skills.
