Corporate Lawyer Salary in India (2026): Fresher to Partner

Corporate law is one of the highest-paying areas of legal practice in India, but there is no single “corporate lawyer salary.” A fresher at a top-tier law firm may start at over ₹20 lakh per year, while a lawyer at a boutique or mid-sized firm may begin closer to ₹7–16 lakh.

The difference becomes even larger with experience. At large corporate law firms, median compensation can cross ₹1 crore for lawyers with 10+ years of experience.

This guide breaks down corporate lawyer salaries in India by experience, firm type, employer and career stage, so you can understand what you can realistically expect.

Corporate Lawyer Salary in India

A fresher at a top corporate law firm can earn approximately ₹18–22.5 lakh per annum. At mid-sized firms, starting salaries are generally around ₹9–16 lakh, while boutique firms may offer approximately ₹7–9 lakh.

With experience, salaries increase significantly. Vahura’s reported median compensation for lawyers at large firms rises from ₹17.3 lakh at 0–1 year of experience to approximately ₹1.05 crore for lawyers with 10+ years of experience.

Partner-level compensation can be substantially higher, particularly for equity partners, although partner income varies considerably depending on the firm’s structure, clients and business generated.

Corporate Lawyer Salary for Freshers at Top Law Firms

Recent published compensation figures show that leading Indian corporate law firms offer some of the highest starting salaries in the legal profession.

For the 2025–26 batch, the reported packages include:

  • Khaitan & Co: ₹22.5 lakh
  • Touchstone Partners: ₹22 lakh
  • Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas: ₹20 lakh
  • S&R Associates: approximately ₹19.8 lakh
  • Trilegal: ₹19.5 lakh
  • Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas: approximately ₹18 lakh

Mid-sized firms generally offer lower starting packages. Spice Route Legal is reported at approximately ₹16.2 lakh, while Argus Partners and JSA are around ₹16 lakh. IndusLaw is reported at approximately ₹15.84 lakh.

For a detailed firm-by-firm comparison, see our guide on highest-paying law firms in India for freshers.

What Does a ₹22.5 Lakh Package Actually Mean?

A law firm’s advertised package does not necessarily mean that the entire amount is fixed monthly salary.

For example, Khaitan & Co’s reported ₹22.5 lakh package consists of different components:

  • ₹17.4 lakh fixed retainer, equivalent to ₹1.45 lakh per month
  • ₹1.3 lakh confirmation bonus
  • ₹1.3 lakh bonus for clearing the All India Bar Examination within the specified period
  • ₹2.5 lakh performance bonus

Therefore, only ₹17.4 lakh of the reported ₹22.5 lakh is fixed.

This is an important point when comparing corporate law offers. Always ask how much of the package is fixed compensation and how much depends on performance, confirmation, examinations or other conditions.

Corporate Lawyer Salary by Experience

Experience has a major impact on compensation, particularly at large corporate law firms.

According to Vahura’s reported median compensation figures:

ExperienceLarge FirmsMid-Sized FirmsBoutique Firms
0–1 year₹17.3 lakh₹9.3 lakh₹7.34 lakh
1–2 years₹20.5 lakh₹11.4 lakh₹8.16 lakh
2–3 years₹24.5 lakh₹14 lakh₹9.35 lakh
10+ years~₹1.05 crore~₹80 lakh~₹62 lakh

The difference between firm categories becomes increasingly significant as experience increases. A lawyer at a large firm can potentially cross the ₹1 crore mark at around the 10-year stage, while compensation at mid-sized and boutique firms remains lower on median figures.

Corporate Lawyer Salary by Employer Type

Where you work can have a significant effect on your salary.

Large or Tier-1 Law Firms

Large corporate law firms generally offer the highest starting salaries. Freshers can expect approximately ₹18–22.5 lakh at leading firms, with compensation increasing substantially as they gain experience.

Mid-Sized Law Firms

Mid-sized firms generally offer around ₹9–16 lakh to freshers. Salaries are lower than at top-tier firms, although the work, practice exposure and working environment can differ significantly between firms.

Boutique Law Firms

Boutique firms may offer approximately ₹7–9 lakh to freshers, although there is considerable variation depending on the firm’s practice area, reputation and client base.

Corporate legal departments can offer a different salary trajectory. Vahura’s in-house data reports median compensation of approximately ₹10 lakh at 0–2 years, ₹24.5 lakh at 4–6 years, ₹41 lakh at 8–10 years and ₹80 lakh at 14+ years.

This means that while law firms may offer stronger compensation at the beginning of a career, experienced in-house lawyers can also earn substantial salaries.

Corporate Lawyer Salary at Partner Level

Partner compensation is difficult to quantify because Indian law firms generally do not publicly disclose individual partner earnings.

The compensation structure also changes considerably at this stage. Salaried partners receive compensation determined by the firm’s structure, while equity partners participate in the firm’s profits.

Income can therefore vary substantially between partners. A partner who brings in major clients and significant business to the firm may earn considerably more than another partner at the same firm.

Industry estimates for equity partners at leading firms can reach several crores per year, but these figures should be treated as estimates rather than standard salaries.

Why Corporate Lawyer Salary Figures Differ So Much

Online salary websites often show much lower figures because they combine lawyers from very different backgrounds and employers.

For example, an average salary based on a small number of job postings may include lawyers working at small firms, regional practices, in-house teams and other legal roles. Such an average does not necessarily represent compensation at India’s leading corporate law firms.

When comparing salaries, look at firm type, experience, city and compensation structure rather than relying on one nationwide average.

What Affects a Corporate Lawyer’s Salary?

Several factors influence compensation.

Firm tier: This is one of the most significant factors, particularly at the beginning of a career.

City: Mumbai and Delhi offices generally feature among the highest-paying markets.

Hiring route: Campus recruitment, pre-placement offers and lateral hiring can lead to different compensation structures.

Practice area: Areas such as M&A and banking and finance can command strong compensation, although salaries vary by firm and individual role.

Experience: Compensation generally increases as lawyers move from junior associate to senior associate and eventually into leadership or partnership roles.

Working hours: Higher compensation at major firms is often accompanied by long working hours and demanding transaction or deal deadlines.

Is Corporate Law Salary Worth It?

The salary can be attractive, but compensation should not be the only factor when choosing corporate law.

A ₹20 lakh offer may look significantly better than a ₹15 lakh offer, but the difference becomes less important if the work, practice area or working environment is not suitable for you.

When comparing offers, look at the fixed salary, bonus structure, practice area, quality of work, training, working hours and long-term career opportunities.

Corporate law can provide strong financial growth, but reaching the highest levels is competitive and requires sustained performance.

The Bottom Line

Corporate law is among the better-paying legal careers in India, but the salary range is extremely wide.

A fresher at a leading corporate law firm can start around ₹18–22.5 lakh, while salaries at smaller firms can be considerably lower. At large firms, median compensation can eventually cross ₹1 crore for lawyers with 10+ years of experience.

When evaluating a corporate law career, do not look only at the headline package. Compare the fixed salary, bonuses, firm tier, practice area, working hours and long-term career prospects before making a decision.
