Essay Topics

The Constitutional Law Essay Competition features three topics:

1. Mineral Taxation and Federalism

This topic examines the relationship between mineral taxation and fiscal federalism in light of the Supreme Court’s decision in Mineral Area Development Authority v. Steel Authority of India and the subsequent MMDR Amendment Act, 2026.

Participants are asked to analyse the interplay between the judgment and the 2026 statutory amendment, particularly its implications for fiscal federalism and the division of constitutional powers.

2. Representation and Federal Balance

This topic focuses on delimitation, democratic representation and India’s federal structure. Participants are invited to examine the tension between the principle of equal voter representation and equal partnership among States in the context of the impending delimitation exercise.

3. Rights & Autonomy

This topic examines gender identity, dignity, autonomy and fundamental rights in the context of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Act, 2026.

Participants are asked to consider whether the changes dilute constitutional protections relating to dignity, autonomy and privacy or provide greater regulatory clarity.
