The 1st GNLU LSC National Essay Competition 2026 is being organised by the Legal Services Committee of Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), Gandhinagar. The competition focuses on Legal Aid and Access to Justice and offers a total prize pool of ₹16,000. The last date for registration, payment and essay submission is 25 September 2026.

About the 1st GNLU LSC National Essay Competition 2026

Gujarat National Law University is organising the competition as part of the 2026 edition of Abhilekh, the publication of the GNLU Legal Services Committee. The initiative focuses on the legal, institutional and socio-economic barriers that affect access to justice.

The competition gives undergraduate students an opportunity to explore contemporary issues surrounding legal aid, equality and access to legal remedies. Participants are expected to present a clear argument supported by legal research and contemporary developments.

Theme of the GNLU LSC National Essay Competition

The central theme of the competition is “Legal Aid and Access to Justice.”

The theme recognises that access to justice involves more than the formal availability of courts. Economic hardship, social exclusion, limited legal awareness and institutional barriers can also prevent people from effectively enforcing their rights.

Therefore, participants can examine legal aid from constitutional, institutional, social and technological perspectives.

Sub-Themes for the Essay Competition

Participants may write on any relevant issue connected with the central theme. Suggested sub-themes include:

  • Constitutional Foundations of Legal Aid in India
  • Legal Aid as a Fundamental Component of the Right to Access Justice
  • Role of the National Legal Services Authority in Advancing Access to Justice
  • Legal Aid for Marginalised and Vulnerable Communities
  • Access to Justice and Socio-Economic Inequality
  • Legal Aid and the Criminal Justice System
  • Legal Aid and Undertrial Prisoners
  • Women’s Access to Justice and Legal Aid Mechanisms
  • Child Rights and Access to Legal Assistance
  • Legal Aid Clinics in Law Universities
  • Technology and the Future of Legal Aid
  • Digital Divide as a Barrier to Access to Justice

These themes make the competition relevant for students interested in constitutional law, human rights, criminal justice, legal services and access to justice.
