Mode: Physical (in-office) | Location: New Delhi | Eligibility: Undergraduate & postgraduate law students, advanced stages of degree | Applications: Rolling, via online form

What Is CTIL?

The Centre for Trade and Investment Law (CTIL) was set up in 2016 by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT). Essentially, the Centre’s job is to provide rigorous legal analysis on international trade and investment law issues to the Government of India and other agencies. So, unlike a law firm internship, this one places you directly inside a government-linked policy and research institution.

About the Internship

CTIL offers internships to undergraduate and postgraduate law students, so that they can gain hands-on experience with international trade and investment law issues. Generally, these opportunities are open to students in the advanced stages of their degree programme. Also, preference is given to students who’ve already completed courses in WTO law and public international law. As a result, this internship suits students with some prior grounding in the subject, rather than complete beginners.

What Kind of Work Can You Expect?

Interns at CTIL work within the Centre’s Research Division, on a genuinely specialised range of issues, including:

  • WTO covered agreements
  • Preferential trade agreements
  • International trade regulations
  • International investment law

This is a fairly niche practice area, so it’s worth applying if you’re specifically interested in trade and investment law, rather than general corporate or litigation experience.

Physical Mode, With a Remote Track Record

CTIL has now resumed its internship programme in physical mode. That said, during the Covid-19 pandemic, the Centre successfully ran a remote internship programme, hosting more than 200 students from law schools across the country. So, while the current mode is in-office, CTIL has clearly built out the infrastructure to run internships flexibly when needed.

Who Should Apply?

This internship is best suited to students who are:

  • In the advanced stages of their law degree, undergraduate or postgraduate
  • Ideally, already familiar with WTO law and public international law

Since CTIL positions itself as a stepping stone into international trade and investment law careers, this internship is particularly useful if you’re exploring that space seriously, rather than just adding another internship to your CV.

How to Apply for the CTIL Internship

  1. Visit the CTIL internship application form: https://ctil.org.in/InternApplication.aspx
  2. Fill in your details, including your law school, year of study, area of interest, and internship period.
  3. Upload your CV, and a writing sample or publication if you have one.
  4. For any queries related to the internship, email internshipctil@iift.edu.

This internship is free to apply for. No legitimate internship charges any fee. If anyone asks you for money to apply, it’s a scam.
