NALSA Internship 2026: Complete Guide for Law Students
The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) has opened applications for its Internship Programme 2026. This NALSA internship 2026 gives law students hands-on exposure to how India’s legal aid system functions, while directly promoting access to justice across the country.
About NALSA
The National Legal Services Authority was constituted under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, to provide free legal services to weaker sections of society and to organise Lok Adalats for the amicable settlement of disputes. Through this internship, NALSA aims to acquaint young law students with its functioning by offering hands-on experience across various specialised areas of legal services.
Eligibility Criteria
Students pursuing a three-year LL.B. course or a five-year integrated law course from any recognised university, college, or institution can apply. However, NALSA gives preference to:
- Students in the 3rd to 5th year of the five-year integrated law course
- Students in the 2nd to 3rd year of the three-year LL.B. course
Duration of the Internship
NALSA offers a one-month (four-week) internship, and each internship cycle starts on the 1st day of the respective month.
Application Procedure
Interested students must fill out the application form and submit it along with the following documents:
- Curriculum Vitae (CV) or Resume
- Expression of Interest (a one-page or shorter write-up explaining your interest in the internship and your suitability for it)
- No Objection Certificate from the appropriate authority (Dean, Head of Department, Internship & Placement Committee, or another higher authority), clearly mentioning the applicant’s course, name, and semester/year
The application form becomes accessible two months before the preceding month of the intended internship. For example, if you want to intern in January 2026, the form remains open from 1st September to 30th November 2025. Applications must be submitted only in online mode, with all documents uploaded before the deadline, since NALSA does not entertain any other mode of application.
Selection Process
NALSA selects interns through a draw of lots, and the decision of the Competent Authority is final.
Certificate of Internship
NALSA awards a Certificate of Internship only upon successful completion of the internship, subject to a minimum of 90% attendance. Because of this attendance requirement, students are strongly advised not to apply for an internship cycle that overlaps with their college examinations. Please note that NALSA does not provide letters of recommendation.
Internship Guidelines
Before applying, keep the following guidelines in mind:
- Interns must arrange their own accommodation; NALSA does not provide TA/DA or any remuneration.
- No stipend is paid for this internship.
- Office timings run from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday to Saturday, unless the concerned officer permits otherwise.
- 90% attendance is mandatory for successful completion.
- Interns must carry their own laptops to complete internship tasks.
- Interns are required to travel locally to visit courts and other offices as needed.
- The dress code is formal Black & White, as prescribed by the Bar Council of Delhi.
- Interns must maintain absolute discipline and etiquette, and male interns are expected to show due respect to female interns throughout the programme; any misconduct results in termination from the internship.
- This is a full-time, in-person internship, and interns cannot pursue any other course or work during the internship period.
What the Internship Involves
On the first day, interns attend an orientation session introducing them to NALSA’s functioning and objectives. Throughout the internship, interns receive reading material covering NALSA’s SOPs, schemes, modules, and statistical reports.
The programme also includes around 10 days of field visits to the Delhi State Legal Services Authority, District Legal Services Authority, Legal Aid Defense Counsel Office, and National Lok Adalat, giving interns direct exposure to Remand Courts, CAW Cells, the DM Office, and other institutions. In addition, interns visit the Mediation Centre at the Supreme Court of India, the Supreme Court Library, and the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee. At the end of the internship, NALSA conducts a closing interaction with its team, along with a group photograph.
