I am a law student who wants to build a career in GST and indirect taxation. While exploring this field, I have noticed that many successful professionals are Chartered Accountants as well as lawyers. This has made me wonder whether an LL.B. alone is enough to succeed in indirect tax practice, or whether pursuing a CA qualification is almost essential for long-term growth.
Is an LL.B. alone sufficient to build a successful career in indirect taxation, or is a CA qualification necessary to succeed in this field?
Tax as a subject of practice requires a bit of number crunching and understanding the financial records. Therefore, the professional courses such as CA, CS or CMA certainly helps to gather a deep understanding of the accounting principles, interpretation of financial records and also add weightage to your profile.
However, to be a successful tax lawyer, it is not mandatory to do such courses. You may do certain short courses to enrich yourself with the basic accounting principles.
All the best!
