I am currently a fourth-year law student at a Tier 2 law school with a strong interest in corporate law. During law school, most of my internships have been in general corporate advisory and commercial disputes, but over the past few months I have become particularly interested in Banking & Finance law after attending a few webinars and reading about debt financing and project finance transactions. However, I have never interned with a Banking & Finance team and do not have an academic background in commerce or finance.
The problem I am facing is that most Banking & Finance teams at leading law firms appear to prefer candidates who already have prior experience in the practice area or possess a strong understanding of financial concepts. I am concerned that my lack of relevant internships and finance knowledge may put me at a disadvantage when applying for future internships and eventually full-time roles.
My question is: If I want to secure a Banking & Finance internship at a top-tier law firm, what specific steps should I take over the next six to twelve months to strengthen my profile? In particular, which technical concepts, practical skills, certifications, or experiences would make my application stand out despite not having prior Banking & Finance internship experience?
